Our free Egyptian hieroglyphs translator converts modern English names into their phonetic Egyptian hieroglyphic equivalents. Since ancient Egyptian writing didn't record vowels exactly like we do, the translation focuses on consonant sounds using the 24-letter hieroglyphics alphabet.

You can copy and paste hieroglyphics directly from our translator using Unicode support. Since 2009, Egyptian hieroglyphs are included in Unicode (U+13000 to U+1342F), making it easy to use in any document.

Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs: The Divine Script

The ancient Egyptians called their writing medu netjer – "the words of the gods." More than just a way to record information, Egyptian hieroglyphs were believed to hold magical power, bringing what they depicted into existence through their sacred forms.

This extraordinary hieroglyphic writing system combined beautiful artistic elements with practical communication, remaining largely unchanged for over three millennia – making ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs one of the world's longest-lived writing systems.

The word "hieroglyph" comes from Greek hieroglyphikos, meaning "sacred carved letters" – perfectly capturing their dual nature as both communication tool and sacred art. For ancient Egyptians, these hieroglyphic symbols weren't merely writing but a divine gift from Thoth, the ibis-headed god of wisdom.

"Egyptian hieroglyphs were not merely a way to write – they were believed to breathe life into what they depicted, making them essential for the deceased's journey into the afterlife."

Today, you can see authentic ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs temple wall inscriptions at sites throughout Egypt, including the temples of Luxor and Karnak, the pyramids near Cairo and Giza, and in museums worldwide.

Who Deciphered Egyptian Hieroglyphs? The Rosetta Stone Story

For over 1,400 years, the meaning of Egyptian hieroglyphs was lost. The last known hieroglyphic inscription was carved in 394 CE, and the knowledge of reading this ancient script died with Egypt's final priests.

The breakthrough came in 1799 when Napoleon's soldiers discovered the Rosetta Stone near the Egyptian town of Rashid (Rosetta). This black granite slab contained the same decree written in three scripts: ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demotic (everyday Egyptian script), and Greek.

In 1822, French scholar Jean-François Champollion finally cracked the code. By comparing the Greek text (which scholars could read) with the hieroglyphic version, and recognizing that cartouches contained royal names like Ptolemy and Cleopatra, he unlocked the mystery of Egyptian hieroglyphs translation.

Comprehensive Guide to Egyptian Hieroglyphs: Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ancient Egyptian writing

Basics & Definition

What are Egyptian hieroglyphs?+
Egyptian hieroglyphs are the formal writing system of ancient Egypt, consisting of pictorial symbols called hieroglyphs. The word 'hieroglyph' comes from the Greek 'hieroglyphikos' meaning 'sacred carved letters.' These symbols represented sounds, words, and ideas, and were used for over 3,500 years (from around 3200 BCE to 394 CE). Hieroglyphs were primarily carved on temple walls, tombs, monuments, and written on papyrus for religious texts.
What does the word 'hieroglyphs' mean?+
The word 'hieroglyphs' comes from two Greek words: 'hieros' meaning 'sacred' and 'glyphein' meaning 'to carve.' Combined, hieroglyphikos literally translates to 'sacred carved letters' or 'sacred engravings.' The ancient Egyptians themselves called their writing system 'medu netjer,' meaning 'the words of the gods,' reflecting their belief that this writing was a divine gift from Thoth, the ibis-headed god of wisdom and writing.
What is the difference between hieroglyphs and hieroglyphics?+
The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference. 'Hieroglyphs' (noun) refers to the individual pictorial symbols themselves, while 'hieroglyphics' (adjective used as noun) refers to the entire writing system or the study/practice of using hieroglyphs. For example, you would say 'the hieroglyph of an owl represents the M sound' but 'I am learning hieroglyphics.' Both terms are correct in everyday usage.
Are Chinese characters hieroglyphs?+
No, Chinese characters (hanzi) are not hieroglyphs, though they share some similarities as logographic writing systems. While both use pictorial symbols, they developed independently on different continents. Egyptian hieroglyphs are a mix of phonetic (sound-based) and logographic (meaning-based) signs, while Chinese characters evolved from pictographs into a primarily logographic system. The key difference is that Egyptian hieroglyphs include an alphabet of consonant sounds, whereas each Chinese character represents a morpheme (meaningful unit).
What do ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs have to do with today's emojis?+
Interestingly, there are striking similarities between ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and modern emojis! Both use pictorial symbols to convey meaning, and many emoji designs closely resemble hieroglyphic symbols (like the eye 👁️ similar to the Eye of Horus, or the sun ☀️ similar to the Ra symbol). Some linguists call emojis a 'return to hieroglyphic thinking' as we increasingly use visual symbols to communicate. However, unlike hieroglyphs, emojis don't form a complete writing system with grammar and phonetic values.
How many different objects and animals do hieroglyphs include?+
Egyptian hieroglyphs include depictions of over 1,000 different objects, animals, people, and abstract symbols. These include at least 50 different birds (from owls to vultures), dozens of mammals (lions, jackals, cows), reptiles (snakes, crocodiles), insects (scarab beetles, bees), body parts (eyes, hands, feet), tools, plants, buildings, and geometric shapes. Each symbol could represent either the object itself, a related concept, or a phonetic sound. The most commonly used subset consisted of about 700-800 signs.
